One of the highlights of my road journey was visiting a reader in Connecticut who had copies of all three of my books. Funny thing, this was three more copies than I had. Anyway, it was my pleasure to autograh all three for her. She also took me out for the Connecticut version of the lobster roll, which features melted butter rather than mayo.
My first book, Living Well with Depression and Bipolar Disorder: What Your Doctor Doesn't Tell You ... That You Need to Know was published by HarperCollins in 2006. The book was written from an expert patient perspective, combining the wisdom of patients and loved ones with clinical and scientific knowlege. Living Well received widespread acclaim across the mental health community, including from Frederick Goodwin MD, former head of the NIMH.
The book also lead to my receiving the prestigious Mogens Schou Award for Public Service, awarded by the International Society for Bipolar Disorders.
My next two were my own ventures into self-publishing, what I called The Bipolar Expert Series. The first, Not Just Up and Down: Understanding Mood in Bipolar Disorder (2015) takes a deep dive into what really drives bipolar disorder. The second, In Search of Our Identity: Understanding Behavior in Bipolar Disorder (2016) is a wide-ranging enquiry connecting the dots between genes and environment from both the cellular and evolutionary perspectives.
My goal had been to publish more books in the series, but then life got in the way. So these two books essentially became orphaned. The first I completed with a failing heart and the second in the chaos of my life following heart surgery. It's a miracle I was able to get them out. I still look forward to their one day finding the readership they deserve.
